What was announced
In September 2026 remove.bg announced that its standalone website and its API will close on 1 December 2026, and that background removal will continue as part of Canva. Unused credits expire on that date. Files already downloaded are unaffected; they are ordinary images on your own disk.
If you used remove.bg by opening the website and dropping pictures on it, every part of that job is on this site, free and at full size. If you used its API from your own software, this site is not a replacement: nothing here runs on a server, so there is nothing for a program to call.

| Call it from code | Not available here | Needs a hosted API or a self-run model |
What is different here
The biggest difference is where the work happens. A hosted remover receives your picture and sends back a result. Here the page downloads the model once — 25 MB for people, 84 MB for objects — and every picture after that is cut out on your own computer or phone. That is why the file is full size without payment, and why the tool keeps working with no connection.
- The first picture waits for the model download. On a slow connection that can be a minute; after that it is instant.
- An older phone is slower than a data-centre graphics card. The portrait model is fast almost everywhere; the object model can take several seconds per picture on a processor.
- There are no saved projects or account history. What you download is what you have.
Questions people ask
- When does remove.bg close?
- Its standalone website and API were announced to close on 1 December 2026, with background removal continuing inside Canva. Credits that have not been used by then expire. Check remove.bg's own announcement for the final details on your account.
- Will my remove.bg files still work?
- Yes. Anything you have already downloaded is an ordinary PNG or JPG on your disk and is unaffected. What ends is the ability to make new ones there and any history kept in the account, so download anything you still need from it before the date.
- Is there an API here to replace theirs?
- No. Everything on this site runs in the visitor's browser, so there is no server to call. For a script that calls an endpoint, you need a hosted API or an open-source model run on your own server; for people who used the website, the pages here cover the same jobs.
- Is it really free at full resolution?
- Yes. The cut-out is computed on your own machine, so there is no processing cost to pass on and nothing to hold back behind a credit. The download is the size of the picture you dropped.
