Why white, and why exactly white
A white background removes the room from the picture. What is left is the subject and nothing to compare it with, which is why marketplaces, ID forms and company directories ask for it. Many of them also check it: a background of 250, 250, 248 — a white wall in daylight — looks white to a person and fails a checker.
This page does not brighten the old background towards white. It removes it and fills pure white behind the subject, so the background pixels are exactly 255, 255, 255 and the subject is exactly as photographed.
Where white backgrounds are asked for
The rules differ in the detail and change over time; these are the common cases, not a checklist for any one of them.
| Where | What is asked |
|---|---|
| Amazon main image | Pure white background, product filling most of the frame |
| Flipkart and Meesho listings | White or very light background for the main image |
| Many visa and ID photos | Plain white or off-white, no shadow on the background |
| LinkedIn and staff directories | No rule, but white or light grey is the convention |
Things white shows up
- Stray hairs and the edges of a jumper. A dark wall hid them; white does not. Zoom in before saving and use the Erase brush with smart edges.
- A colour cast on the subject. Skin lit by a green wall stays slightly green on white. The spill cleanup takes the tint out of the edge, not out of the whole face.
Questions people ask
- Is the white really pure white?
- Yes. The backdrop is filled with 255, 255, 255 and the subject is laid on it. Choose PNG if a checker must see exactly 255 in every background pixel: JPG compression can nudge pixels next to the subject by one or two levels.
- My white product disappears into the white background. What now?
- Turn on the shadow. A soft contact shadow under the product gives its edge something to read against without tinting the background, and most marketplaces allow a slight natural shadow.
- Is this the same as the product page?
- The product page does the same whitening and also centres the product on a square canvas at a chosen fill, which is what marketplaces measure. Use this page when the frame should stay as photographed.
